I remember somewhere, maybe in his autobiography "The Incompleat Folksinger" or maybe in "Sing Out," Pete Singer listed "Ode to Billie Jo" in a timeline on the history of the popularity of folk music. He didn't discuss whether it was a great song, but considered the fact that the "ballad style" song became a hit significant.
