I have always preferred Vincent Bugliosi's formulation (from the book "And the Sea Will Tell"): innocent unless proven guilty. "Until" leaves the suggestion that a finding of guilt is the natural conclusion to a criminal trial. "Unless" reminds you that the accused is innocent unless the prosecution succeeds in proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. | |||
