I stumbled on this thread while searching for the "Old Grye" song, and found back in 2007 the post giving the words of the song, (sorry, poster, I can't locate the entry to identify you at the moment - this thread is huge!!) and the suggestion that "grye" is a Romany word for "horse". More searching in Romany dictionaries confirms this, and a bit of lateral thinking and lucky guesswork reveals that one Romany word for "old" is "chori". So "chori old grye" - "poor old horse"! Result! Now, does anyone know a bit of Romany? - can you make anything of "bonny sweet" which might be exactly what it says, but doesn't seem to me to be a particularly "horsey" king of term of endearment - could that too be a corruption of a Romany expression? Any suggestions welcome. SJ
