GUEST,bigJ Stan Hugill trophy (13) RE: Stan Hugill 14 Nov 00

Well, as you can see from the above date this has been a long time coming but it's a long and convoluted story including e-mails to Brittany, e-mails to the editor of the magazine mentioned above, holidays of the organiser of the festival Michel Colleu and the involvement of my local French Consul whose assistance has been greatly appreciated. So here is the information gathered in French and translated. It came to me today!

It was at the initiative of Le Chasse-Maree and Maritime Life and Traditions that the first competition for the Stan Hugill Trophy took place during the Douarnanez 2000 festival. The competition took place on Wednesday 19th July on the subject of the 'Bateau-Scene' (general activities on boats); and on Thursday 20th July on the subject of tacking manoeuvres on board ship 'virer au cabestan' (heaving at the capstan), 'au guindeau' (a smaller capstan with a horizontal axle)(I suspect that's a pump shanty -bigJ) and ' a hisser' (heaving up the anchor).

There were thirteen groups or individuals taking part:-

Callenig ...................................Wales (GB)
Daniel Roy...............................Quebec
Delai l'Aiga.............................France (Occitany)
Frederique Forgeard................France (Brittany)
Gromor at les Gueules a Fioul-France (Normandy)

Lierelet....................................Holland
Mollyhawks.............................British Isles
Mueiz Port-Rhu.......................France (Brittany)
Percy I Lotry Shangaiu............Poland
Rum and Shrub Shantymen.....British Isles
Tom Lewis...............................Canada

Now for the results:

1st........Moueiz Port Rhu singing 'Jean Matilot' with a special mention from the jury for the interpretation of an hitherto unpublished work song.
2nd.......Percy I Lotry Shangaiu singing 'Ja, Ja, Skipper Jan Maloy'.
3rd.......JOINT WINNERS .Gromor Et Les Gueukes a Fioul singing 'A Dunkerque Vient d'Arriver'
AND:
Johnny Hanging singing 'Sally' (This could be any of a variety of songs mentioning the ubiquitous Sally - bigJ)

Songs for Heaving Up the Anchor:
1st.......Tom Lewis of Canada (No note made of his song I'm afraid - bigJ)
2nd...... Percy I Lotry Shangaiu singing 'Cheerly Man'
3rd........ Johnny Hanging singing 'Hang, Boys, Hang' (Hanging Johnnie)

The Stan Hugill Trophy was not awarded to a group but WAS awarded to Tom Lewis of Canada as a Chanteyman.

The judges for the competition were:
Ben Gontran from Rodrigues Island, singer and collector of sailor's songs.
Robert Bouthillier from Quebec, collector and singer.
Inge Wijk from Sweden.
John Wright from England.
Michel Colleu from Brittany, organiser of the festival
and
Martin Hugill one of Stan's sons.

Bon voyage!
