I recently read the diary of Ralph Semmes, captain of the Alabama. At one point he was expressing his displeasure that his personal slave had been persuaded to desert while on shore leave in Havana. The main gist of his comments was "he'll be really sorry when he realises all he's given up by trading slavery for freedom".
Some things in the South don't seem to have changed in 150 years.
