I got an email from ray Black of Yorkshire Garland who kindly added a link to a digitised book by Ingledew's The Ballads and Songs of Yorkshire (North Allerton 1860), which coincidentally Paul Davenport pointed me to thismorning during anothe rphone conversation. It's there as The Chase of the Black Fox and was sent to Ingledew by Mr Wm.Grainger of Minskip . It looks like a composition with some flowery language but is said to be based on tales 'yet related in the Midland parts of Yorkshre,. I may try it out with a trad tune but I prefer Graham's composition. Inceidentally Ingeldew wrote Old N--k as it must have been bad form to name the D---l !
