Eliza, that happens fairly often to apple trees. The RHS has some advice about it. My favorite apple is the Baldwin, selected and memorialized a couple towns from here. However, it ripens in October. For the first apples, we had a Duchess of Oldenberg that produced edible apples for (only) a couple weeks in August and a Cortland which filled the gap between the Duchess and Baldwins.
