The instrument Bill/Sables has sounds like a Gimbri from North Africa.Robin Williamson used one on some cuts on some of the early Incredible String Band albums.I found one about 30 years ago in a pawn shop in Newark,NJ, supposedly owned by a GI who brought it back from ww2.As I recall it had 3 strings, I misplaced it and haven't seen it in years.Its not to hard to imagine a similar instrument migrated from East to North Africa or vice versa.Another place worth checking might be The House of Musical Traditions which I believe is in Maryland.
