Have you guys tried GIMP? It is FREE software.
It lacks a few of the more esoteric Photoshop tools, but is definitely a professional grade graphics app. Available for Windows and Linux.
I've been using it for years for professional graphics work and photo editing.
For vector drawing, there is Inkscape. Another FREE application. Again, easily up to coping with all of my professional requirements. Works on Windows and Linux.
I do still sometimes use Adobe's products in the office, but only because my employer has them installed on the machines there. Most of the time I just fire up my personal laptop and work on that, leaving the desk PCs turned off.
These alternatives may not suit everyone, but I'm a pro user and they are enough for me. Might save some of you a few $/£...
