Earlier today, I was wandering around the wonderful Harris Museum and Art Gallery in Preston, Lancashire. They have a great little fine-art collection that you really must see, if you're passing. Anyway, I was looking at a small collection of hand-written books, and one of them was a school exercise book from the 19thC. It contained a beautifully copied-out copperplate list of Imperial measures: 12 Inches = 1 Foot, 3 Feet = 1 Yard, etc. But the first item on the list was '3 Barleycorns = 1 Inch'. I never knew that! And although I'm willing to bet that everyone else here probably did know it, let none of them say that I'm too old to learn from the very young.
