Can't really see the benefit of the Northwest Passage to Russian natural gas exports to China - Wouldn't they use the Northeast Passage? - or alternatively why not just pipe it there overland?

Northwest or Northeast Passages would be deemed as international waterways with right of peaceful passage open to all.
