It all depends on how you define singing. Does she have a well-trained voice? Probably not but can she communicate? That is just as important. A well-trained voice allows you to keep it as you grow older. Communication is perhaps even more important. Alan Lomax certainly thought Shirley was a good singer and promoted her extensively.
