Jim McLean Tech: Any Raspberry Pi/OpenELEC users? (8) RE: Tech: Any Raspberry Pi/OpenELEC users? 06 Feb 14

I purchased the Pi as soon as it became available but soon put it back on the shelf.
I am an electronic engineer and built my own computer way back in the 70s so I was interested in this little device. I found I could do anything with my BBC B and Spectrum that the Pi was able to do and found no further use for it. Now I have given it to my 10 year old grandson who is using Scratch at school (on a PC) but hope to teach him Python and then he'll be able to use the Pi's ability to control external objects (I built a sound recognition system using a BBC B in the 80s).
The built in language I found to be very similar to Sinclair QL end therefor couldn't see any advantage in using the Pi. It was also very messy to start with as it required an external mouse, keyboard and HD ready monitor (or a VGA converter), wires everywhere. I have found a company which issues an SD card with remote access included so you can use your laptop ... much cleaner.
I would be interested for any info on what the Pi can be specifically used for, that a PC cannot do. I saw on the TV last night that this will be the year of "coding" whatever that means but I will try to find out.
