I have access to a number of yahoo email addresses. My primary email address (not yahoo) is in the address book on all of these.
I recently had reasons to log into two of the yahoo accounts to use Flickr photo sites. Both times, I was given that run around about weak password, security question, etc. It took several attempts to change the password and get to the yahoo mail. I had heard that Yahoo recently had a major hacker attempt and assumed that this was Yahoo tightening their security.
Apparently not, because a day or so later, I received the same sort of dodgy emails, with links that sent my antivirus software screaming, that I had received from a relative's yahoo email address, several weeks earlier. It must be the hackers who somehow prevent access to the yahoo email accounts until we sign in through them? They must be able to record our submissions and after that, gain access to our accounts?
The hackers must now have access to both those accounts? None of the other accounts that have my primary email address in the address book have sent me the dodgy emails, just those two that now have the "new improved safe" passwords and security questions.
I feel sick about this and helpless, wondering how I can get the accounts back from the hackers. If I change the passwords again, will that also go through their system? Abandoning the Yahoo accounts is not an option because they are linked to Flickr photo sites that I'm helping elderly friends with. They count on me to keep them safe and I messed up.
I'm also wondering what the purpose of accessing the Yahoo mail is? I've noticed a large increase in junk mail since that happened. If their only purpose was to gather email addresses to spam, I can live with that. I wonder what other damage they might do?
