I started going into pubs legally ahem in 1963 The piece of advice I received from older drinkers was avoid the mild as landlords pour any old rubbish into the barrels and serve it up. I started working in pubs in 1964 and it was indeed true - half finished pints all went back into the mild barrels I do not know if this still true.
