Here's a nice acknowledgment of the folk revival. Claiborne County Breakdown. Well known old time folk songs expanded into short stories. There's the Oxford Tragedy, Mollie Bawn and Silver Dagger. There's also John Henry and The Wreck on the C&O. For some relief from all the death there's Good Old Mountain Dew and The Johnson Boys.
