The Irish song 'S óró londubh buí(O my blackbird gay), linked at the top of the page, seems to be a fuller and presumably earlier version of this song; it fills in a lot of gaps & makes sense of the more mysterious passages. Thanks to Matthew Edwards (no relation!) for posting it. I'd also like to commend the Luke Kelly version, linked to in the previous comment - a stunning bit of singing.
