Seth BS: Vinyl is fun (26) RE: BS: Vinyl is fun 31 Dec 00

I have accumulated about 5000 vinyl lp's over the last thirty years. Before the advent of CDs, I had sort of a medium size habit I lived in Berkeley and Oakland for about ten years, and there were realy great used record shops there in the 1970's. It was after the introduction of CDs that my collection began to go nuts. People were dumping huge collections of JAzz, classical and folk into local thrift stores, and they were moving it out at .50 to one dollar per record. When it's that cheap, and a lot of the stuff has never been opened, let alone played, it's real easy to justify spending $20.00 for forty lps you are only sort of interested in, but would be nice to hear. So now I have this huge mass of stuff-I'm like the monkey who reached through the hole to grab a bunch of peanuts and now his hand is too big to get back through the hole. I'm in China, records are in the U.S. in storage which is costing me $100/month. What will I do? I don't know. I like having lots of music available, just like any other kind of library. I have not seen one vinyl record of any kind in China, but they sure have a lot of CDs, but not much that I want. I bought six turntables from the Goodwill, so I will be able to play records for a long time ! My kids think I'm nuts, but they all want to get the collection when I die! Seth from China
