Long hours huddled in a cave, avoiding dangerous critters, animal, human and imaginary, and doodling (art) is something to occupy time. It probably developed along with the first sticks used to stir stew or dig tubers. The earliest images found depend on likelihood of preservation, and assumptions of where the humans were sufficiently advanced to make fire.
