GUEST,John James Obit: Stan Jay - Mandolin Brothers Oct 2014 (3) RE: Obit: Stan Jay - Mandolin Brothers Oct 2014 23 Oct 14

What a loss this man's passing is. His contribution to the acoustic guitar scene over 40 years is far greater than has maybe been recognised. I first visited the Staten Island shop in 1979, when I was on tour in the US with Happy Traum. I was sceptical at first..Mandolin Brothers ? What do I want here ? Of course when you get off the ferry still buzzing with sailing past the Statue of Liberty ,through the heavily barred door of the shop...and then after the warm greeting offered my Stan & Hap there before you is the finest array of American acoustic instruments you have seen. I recall staying there long after closing time as Hap and Stan passed me yet another vintage Kalamazoo to try.
Today when clichés become clichés,in this instance it's true to say that Stan Jay really had a passion..he showed it in his life
style..for all things musical.
