I was in Berlin when the wall was built, August 1961. I was visiting a friend who, fortunately, lived in the West, but the place was in chaos with marches organised daily. When I left, Lyndon B Johnson was entering the City, handing out ball point pens. I was with Nigel Denver, he had his guitar and I had bagpipes. During the day, we sat by a dividing lake and played to the VoPos on the other side. We were given a lift through the corridor back to West Germany by a Daily Express reporter who sent a reporter to my folks' house in Paisley and to Nigel's in Glasgow. My father gave him an interview while Nigel's mother chased him down the stairs!
