Aesop. Wow it's older than I thought. I knew that his basically racist story about God and Satan dividing up the dead on the other side of a graveyard wall "You take this one, I'll take that one. OK but what about the two on the other side of the wall?" came from ancient Greece. I had no idea that "top's off, middle's gone etc. went back that far.
