It's one of the joys of the British system, that anyone who can raise £500 can stand, even if they believe that the world is run by giant lizards, or they are just having fun (The Monster Raving Loony Party). It also allows single issue candidates (I saw one once for the 'Stop [named school] expelling [named student] Party).) Many, of course, are totally barking, but not all. Just occasionally, someone actually gets elected - Martin Bell, for example, or the doctor whose sole issue was to stop the local hospital being closed. I'm looking forward to the lists of candidates being published so I can see what we've got this time.
