to adress the question "what is a summer associate".... it is like an "internship" for collge students to get a taste of what their professional life might be like. That's why Michelle was "mentoring" him... these internships are usually done through their school and can be paid or unpaid and they might get college credit for it, but they do not have their degree and are not employed in a professional capacity. so the simple answer is that when Barrack spent a summer with that law firm, he was not yet a lawyer, so it is not correct to call him a corporate lawyer... he was a student with a summer position.
