I've heard say he weren't as well endowed in early days until his navel was incorporated into the overall scheme of things. Though when this was - who knows? I was always told he was anciently pagan, but now I hear he's no earlier than the 1600s... As with the Gateshead Angel, I hear the nearby car-park is a local dogging hot-spot.
