I remember owning an LP of John Laurie (Corporal Frazer of Dad's Army) reading Child Ballads - thought it was a piss-take. Now that sounds like my sort of thing! Must check it out. Thanks for the heads-up, as they say... I tons of old pre-folk Ballads Collections that mix up traditional (or 'Child' ballads) with all sorts of other popular narrative poetry of the time (Service, Kipling, Keats) - so taken in that sort literary context it all makes perfect sense. Was it is this? The Jupiter Book of Ballads Just listened to the samples of Laurie's Usher's Well and Alison Gross and I'm beguiled!
