As I said the link above gives the date of the wife's funeral as 1964 which is shown in the first seconds of the clip. Gently then instead of retiring asks to be moved to County Durham where he meets Bacchus for the first time. Any earlier clips showing Gently or events in his life must be flashbacks and can't include Bacchus at least not if they relate to Gently. If they do then that is a far bigger mistake for the series than the length of someone's hair would be.
