GUEST,Johnny O'Brien Irish music origins (4) Irish music origins 12 Jan 01

I play in a traditional Irish band that includes guitar, tenor banjo, fiddle, bouzouki and bohdran.

The guitar developed in Spain, the banjo in Africa, the fiddle in Italy, and the bouzouki in Greece. As a drum, the bohdran is also descended from Africa.

Of course, that means that traditional Irish music could not have developed as we know it but for the contributions of the Spanish, Africans, Italians and Greeks.

A proud Irish musician
