For the record, adult Monarch butterflies feed on nectar from flowers, principally goldenrod if they can find it, but other flowers will do. They will also feed on juices from fruits. Milkweed is used earlier in the life cycle. The female Monarch lays eggs exclusively on milkweed. Monarch caterpillars will eat nothing else. The eggs hatch into caterpillars which feed on the milkweed, molting several times, going through about 5 stages of growth before forming chrysalises from which the adults emerge a week or so later.
