In support of the association of the willow with the theme of sadness and separation,it was often used as a motif on tombstones in the 19th century.I was just looking at some fine examples in an abandoned cemetary a few days ago.The scientific name of one specie of weeping willow is salix babylonica recalling the exile of the ancient jews to Babylon.
