I learned the song as a kid on Barney and Friends in the early 90s. It first appeared in the Barney franchise on the last video of the predecessor Barney and the Backyard Gang series, Rock with Barney, in 1991. I had wondered where this song originated and after reading this, it sounds like the 60s but it could have been earlier.
