A split infinitive doesn't really harm anyone's understanding or interpretation of what's being said, but apostrophes are frequently essential to enable the reader to know what the writer is trying to say. On that basis I tend to be on the side that says let's try and teach the proper use of apostrophes but accept that from time to time errors will be made. That doesn't mean that we should stop trying. It's becoming far too popular to say that if something is difficult it should be abandoned. Grammar should exist where it is useful.
