I was taught at about age 5 by my paternal grandfather in the early 70's and know my dad knew it too. His version included the intro and a few minor changes such as replacing "the good old summertime" with "and pork's from porcupine", which I love. This song is one of a twin-set in my childhood memories with another favorite; There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly.
