Phil - do you have the Bronson Child Ballads book(s)? Singing Tradition of Child's Popular Ballads In reply to your question about stories and narratives, I think i'd struggle to find a long ballad that didn't tell a story! I'd have to flick back through the Bronson to check but most of them do... (Incidentally, out of your list, Phil, I'd never really thought of Lord Allenwater or the Wife of Usher's Well as being long ballads. Aren't they around the 10-15 verse mark, rather than 20+ monsters?)
