Leeneia, I think the situation worked both ways,some coarse songs were "cleaned up" to appeal to a polite audience and some polite songs acquired a coarse version. The Victorians were very prim and proper in the area of sexual relations,covering ankles and the bottoms of table legs etc.to be seen to be correct.
