Speaking as both patient & practitioner, good mental health has never been a 'given'. Donuel's remarks are very pertinent in that regard, to which I would add 'nature & nurture' & our DNA. I am greatly encouraged by the increased willingness of the public, patients & their families, professionals & professional organisations, the media, local & national government to engage in the mental health debate. This is a very generalised overview of the evolving situation in the UK. I would be extremely interested to hear from anyone living outside the UK. In what state of health is 'The Mental Health Debate' in your neck of the woods? To conclude; a personal view: I see Physiology & Psychology slowly, inexorably converging until they reach a point when a patient's treatment plan will, by default, favour neither & include both. Finally, from Donuel's elegant prose: "We all have a unique recipe with a sprinkling of.... pathologies".
