Georgiansilver Origins: Died for Love: Sources and variants (125* d) RE: Origins: Died for Love: Sources and variants 27 Dec 16

A variation of one of the few versions of a song already mentioned.

A SAILORS LEAVE

A sailor, coming home on leave,
Did find his house without a light.
He crept up to his daughters room,
And found her hanging from a beam.

So he got his knife and cut her down,
And on her breast these words he found.
I loved a sailor, loved him true,
Oh see what true love can do.

Oh father do not weep for me,
He was a sailor young and free.
He took me down a shady lane,
Now for his love I die in vain.

Oh dig my grave go dig it deep,
And place white lilies at my feet.
And at my head go place a dove,
To show that I have died for love.

So I dug her grave I dug it deep,
I placed white lilies at her feet.
And at her head I placed a dove,
To show that she had died for love.

Now all you maidens bear in mind,
A good mans love is hard to find.
So if you find one good and true,
Don't trade the old love for the new.

Used to sing this acapella at Folk clubs in the 1970's
