As an Alaskan I harbor the proud statement that we could divide our State in halves and so make Texas the third largest state. . . Oft-times I've heard the parlor story that Texas could subdivide into four additional states and so allow the Replicants additional control of the rightist political agenda. This always seemed dumb to me because there are plenty of leftists left in Texas. So I figured the tale of multiple mini-Texases was a line of BS. When Don'l dredged it up I became positive. So I looked it up: Turns out to be partly true. Texas was admitted to the Union during that historical period when slavery was being practiced under law. There were fears that political shenanigans could subvert the Missouri Compromise so some verbiage was added to the annexation documents. Besides, Texans do not want to give up their status of being the 'biggest' of the Lower 48. Since that time period, Texas tried to drop out of the United States and was restrained by force from letting that happen. So the point is currently moot.
