That kind of thing has always been around in one way and another. There's a kind of fascination with the details of disaster and death. Think of the crowds at public executions, or the way many people slow down to look at road accidents. The other side of it is the way people can rush to help and to provide assistance for total strangers, and that's been very evident this time. And that's just as much a measure of "what our society has become".
