I'm afraid, Lyrinda, that the problem is in your ear. Stan very clearly sings "Upper Canadian". I remember a friend of mine first hearing that recording back in the '70s, and responding with some indignation: "That's not Upper Canadian concrete and glass - it's Nova Scotian concrete and glass!" He was right. Stan was a Nova-Scotian-Upper-Canadian who had gotten it into his head that Upper Canada embodied all that was wrong with modernity, and Nova Scotia all that was right about the past. I think he got over that before too long. 'Upper Canada' was the pre-Confederation (1867) term for what we now call Ontario. In the 1970s, it was used in a kind of pejorative way to refer to Ontario.
