This is a revelation to me, though confusing. I've long been a Lake Erie lover, but my knowledge tends to be of the Ohio coast. I've also been interested in the canals adjacent to Lake Erie, and have visited some parts, particularly historic Zoar Village downstate, which is celebrating it's bicentennial this year. Deep valleys leading to Lake Erie aren't part of this geography. Thanks for posting this information.
