The bear brought knives (claws and teeth) to a gunfight: and knew he'd better leave when the gun fired. Sounds like your family knows their stuff. Is this the veterinarian daughter?? No disrespect intended, but I can see how bears get territorial, particularly when climate change has messed with the food in their territory. There is abundant documentation and publicity now, about the species of pine tree that supplies the pine nuts which keep the bears fed during the lean, cold months of the year. Warming temperatures have made those pine forests warm enough in the winter for a certain species of beetle to winter there as well. Now those beetles are killing off the pine trees, and there goes the bears' lean-month food supply. So now the bears have less to eat, and they may have to travel out of their former bounds to get it....
