Further rumination on Akhenaton's comment. There is one practical reason for US natives to insist on linking town names "to the state concerned." There are city/town names that are common enough literally to have one such in every one of the lower 48 states on the continent. One has to differentiate between the towns by specific mention of the state concerned. "Springfield" is a classic case, almost every state has got a town, if not a city, named "Springfield." And so many others: Bowling Green. Woodville. Lafayette. I'm too lazy to recall the rest.
