If belfast who posted on 2 November 2002 is still around, no, you didn't dream up that verse. There are (at least) two different recordings of Leadbelly singing the song up on Youtube, and on one of them he sings that verse, and on the other I can't quite make out what he says before he starts singing, but I think he says he won't sing "that verse", and I assume that's the verse he's referring to.
