Hi, I started my painting of The Spanish Lady-- the rough painting is here: http://mattesonart.com/the-spanish-lady.aspx It's a bit intimidating to create an image as in Campbell's poem, Old age has laid its hand upon me Cold as a fire of ashy coal And where is the lovely Spanish lady The maid so neat about the sole? that he remembers her so many years later. I was unable to reconcile the image of her washing her feet so I returned to the original image of the 1700s which may have been relevant to Campbell's "Spanish Lady" also. She is bathing herself with a sponge by candlelight and moonlight. I included the two traditional stanzas on the left hand column they read: As I went out through Dublin City, At the hour of twelve o´clock at night, Who should I see but a Spanish lady, Washing her feet by candle light. First she washed them and then she dried them, Over a fire of ambery coal, In all my life I never did see, A maid so neat about the sole. I will finish the painting soon and hope to get the other three song paintings done that I've put off for several years. Painting has become too difficult. Richie
