Thanks for that list. One sentence that caught my attention towards the end of the book, from Julia Bishop rather than Steve Roud, was "On the other hand, Kidson believed that "folk song", when all was said and done, was often little more than archaic popular song". The 'evidence' in the book makes it look that way to me, which is not to say that in the past, as in the late 20th century, some popular hits of the day were not penned by people who started of (and maybe ended up) 'ordinary'. Overall the book seems to be a historical account of people doing what people who 'made their own entertainment' did. Tthe collectors' 'folk song' being when it was done near the poorer end of society.
