Now it's coming out. The atrocities perpetrated by Japanese soldiers on Allied POWs and civilian populations, as in the rape of Nanking, are beyond the pale. And the refusal of hyper-nationalists to acknowledge them makes them that much worse. However, when the US bombed my wife's village, the farming families they killed didn't do any of that and didn't even have a say in it. They were as innocent as my own parents or yours. So were the 97,000 killed and 125,000 wounded in the firebombing of Tokyo, the 90,000 and 39,000 (low-end estimates) killed in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively. Labelling and equating these innocent civilians with military butchers all as "Japs" show EXACTLY what is wrong with racial epithets.
