I remember an austrailian song describing a "voice like a billygoat pissing in a tin" - found that quite colorful... Apart of that I agree with Will: a lot of journalists write pompously. One reason might be that they do not really know the subject they are writing about. In fact, some newspapers should bear a note: "may contain traces of journalism".
