My Grandmother (born 1910) in North Carolina used to sing this short version, similar to Rosenthal's Goat. Can't reconcile Isaac and Sal... There was a man named Isaac Small Who bought a goat right from the stall That goat had teeth so sharp and fine Ate six red shirts right off the line Sal took a stick and broke Bill's back And tied him to the railroad track Bill gave a moan as if in pain Coughed up six shirts and flagged the train
