Stonewall's religious fervor gets him the "conservative" label quite often but he was a "progressive" by the standards of his time. Rigid and devout yes, but not "old fashioned" conservative. The First Great Awakening gave us the expressions Old and New Light. Them in which the "New Light" of conversion burned the brightest were said to be Blue Light, the brightest light known at the time.
